He is the immediate Past Secretary General of the World Medical Association (WMA). The WMA is a global federation of National Medical Associations representing the millions of physicians worldwide. He has served on advisory boards to the WHO Director-General and the Un Secretary-General. He was instrumental in the establishment of the World Health Professions Alliance, an alliance between the World Medical Association, International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). During 2006 he was elected to serve as the Honorary Secretary-General of the Africa Medical Association (AfMA). He qualified as physician in South Africa and completed his postgraduate studies in family medicine and child health in South Africa and Oxford, England. He is a Fellow of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Romanian Academy of Medical Science and was awarded Life Membership of the International Federation of Medical Student Associations (IFMSA).
